Mixing on the Green

We've all attended the typical business mixer. We've endured the mindless conversation, the rapid exchange of business cards, and the obligatory raffling off of shamelessly self-promoting items.

What if we had an alternative to the typical networking event? What if we had a way to make mixers meaningful and enjoyable? Well, you could always try networking on the golf course! Why the golf course, you ask?

1.     Environment

Networking events are often uncomfortable and awkward at best. Conversations usually feel forced and are rarely more than small talk. After all, there’s little to talk about inside a restaurant except for focusing on the food. On a golf course, you can talk about your game, the weather, and the course itself. Being outdoors is calming and the game of golf encourages a level of intimacy with your fellow players that no restaurant mixer could provide.

2.     Time

A game of golf takes anywhere from four to six hours. This gives you plenty of time to make more than just a contact. The people in your foursome are likely people you will build a solid relationship with. Instead of a five-minute conversation and the exchange of business cards, you have hours to build the beginning of a solid partnership.

3.     You Don’t Have to Golf

Maybe a full round of golf doesn't fit into your networking schedule. Why not shorten it to nine holes? Or even better, host a networking event on the driving range. A simple putting contest and a few stalls on the driving range are much less intimidating than 18 holes of golf. People enjoy having time outside and simple golf-themed games are great (non-cheesy) icebreakers!

Networking is more valuable when you are able to create a relationship, not just a contact. That’s why golf works so well. After all, it’s said that business is best done on the golf course!
