Should You Change Your Tournament Venue After A Successful Event?

Throughout the life of an annual tournament or event, your committee may have some tough decisions to make. Even if your clients are happier than ever with the event, or you've grown player counts and exceeded your fundraising goals year after year, be prepared that the question of whether you should switch your tournament venue—even after a successful event—might arise.

A new member may propose that their favorite course or club should become the host venue. You also may be solicited by another course or have a few committee members that had a great time playing at the course down the street, and suddenly your tournament location becomes a topic open for debate.

As your group contemplates a move, here are a few questions to ask:

  • -- How will our primary clients, vendors, donors & players be affected?
  • -- How difficult is the course? What's the average pace of play?
  • -- How is the drive getting to / from the venue?
  • -- Will there be other tournaments or golfers on course?
  • -- What type of amenities are offered at the new location? What is permitted and not?
  • -- How attentive and responsive is the course or club staff?
  • -- What type of experience will my clients, vendors, donors & players have?

And as you make your decision, remember to:

  • -- Listen to your team and your guests
  • -- Share your concerns with your current host facility. They may have some creative ideas to incorporate into your day, and they may be able to offer new service(s) at little or no additional cost for your patronage
  • -- Share all details of your current event (e.g., agenda, setup & logistics, food & beverage, contests, etc.) with the potential venue(s). Ensure they really can take care of you and all of your needs for the day.
  • -- Ensure the venue you select is your organization's advocate, wanting to help you achieve and exceed your ultimate tournament goals.
