How many people do you know without an email address? How many companies do you trust that don't have a website? Do you have any friends without Facebook pages? Chances are, your answer to all these are: not that many. Even my 82-year-old grandmother has a Facebook page. And yet, it seems that despite the prevalence of the internet in our daily life, many golf tournaments fail to take advantage of the power and convenience the internet and social media provide to an event. Take advantage of being able to position yourself as a "with it" tournament with these few easy ways to incorporate using social media & a website into the planning and hosting stages of your next charity golf tournament.

Savvy Social Media

Use Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, and Instagram to help generate excitement and "word of mouth" for your event. Try to post at least once a day. Running low on ideas?

Try these:

  • - Introduce team & committee members
  • - Provide relevant, interesting facts
  • - Give tournament updates
  • - Blast out reminders to register, buy sponsorships, and spread the word
  • - Share posts regarding last year's event

Don’t forget, a picture is worth a thousand words. More than a third of links shared on Twitter are images, and on Facebook photos typically generate twice as many likes, according to social media expert Shea Bennet of mediabistro.com.

Winning Websites

A website for your tournament makes it easy for your organization and your potential golfers and donors in so many ways. A website can provide information, accept sign-ups, and even accept payment and registration. Even the basic contact email and general Where / When / Why of a tournament can help your tournament generate buzz and increase its reach. A fully interfaced website design can give you an even bigger boost. American Golf, for example, gives its clients access to Sadie Golf, a website assistance builder that helps you set up a site that can accept online registration, collect payment, and even manage pairing sheets.

Having a strong internet presence for your tournament is nothing to be intimidated by, and it isn't difficult to set up. Utilizing social media and a website can keep your tournament relevant throughout the entire year, and increase your reach and fundraising. So make sure your upcoming tournament is fully utilizing the online realm!
