When planning a golf event, either as a fundraiser or just for fun, there are some common mistakes that it pays not to repeat. Making yourself aware of these will go a long way in the proper execution and success of your event.

1. Set a tournament date early. At least three to six months in advance.
Oftentimes tournament planners do not give themselves enough time to market the event, gather sponsorships, and attract players.

2. Stay away from the big fish.
When trying to get sponsors for your event, avoid large corporations such as Pepsi or Wal-Mart. We have found it more effective to use your personal networks to gain multiple small sponsorships. Use Facebook, talk to coworkers, ask your insurance broker—it only takes a little bit of outreach to connect with your circles.

3. Pick a golf course that isn't too difficult.
All tournament planners should put the golfers’ enjoyment as their top priority. Most players will typically be a “below average” golfer, so choosing a course with an easier layout will increase the enjoyment. All players love to make birdies!

4. A committee is beneficial.
Tournament directors usually have a lot to handle when planning a tournament, and often they try to do everything themselves. Whether you recruit one extra person, your kids, or ten friends—a committee will be beneficial to your tournament planning process.

5. Stay focused on your end goal!
Whether your main goal is to just have fun or to raise funds for a great cause, do not lose sight of it. In all aspects of the tournament planning process, it is important for the tournament director to remember that what they are doing can help a needed charity or create lifelong friendships.

Keeping these points in mind while you plan your golf tournament will help you feel more organized and confident, and will help you host a successful event in the near future... or at least three months out!
